How to lose weight in Kuwait

Which Fitness/Health Program Is Right For You

By Claire Hayden

Has anyone else noticed the amazing surge of gyms & focus on weight loss that seems to be happening in Kuwait?

The sudden growth in the fitness industry is good news for a country where obesity was becoming a worrying concern.

There are the traditional health clubs & spas, men/women only gyms, then incredible programs such as EMS (if you haven't tried this you have GOT to give it a go) and HIIT training (fresh from the US, another awesome workout that we love), diet care centres; you can even have your diet plan delivered daily to your home, and something that seems to be a growing trend, surgery, whether it is liposuction or a gastric bypass, its all available here in Kuwait.

But how do we chose what is the right gym/exercise/diet program for us?

What is EMS?

EMS stands for Electro Muscular Stimulation, a technique that uses current impulses to contract muscles. It is a full body workout in just 20 minutes, which works 90% of your muscles, (versus 40% in conventional training) targets both surface and deep muscles tissues, compensates muscular imblances, helps in muscle formation and definition and improves performance, speed & strength.

It also: Reduces cellulite, tones and reshapes the body, helps in correcting body posture, stimulates metabolism and boosts fat-burning and weight loss. And yes, it also has amazing health benefits: rehabilitates and works as body therapy, reduces back pain, improves circulation, gentle on the joints an injury-free workout.

Imagine you can achieve all of this in just one 20minute work out a week, of course, if you want faster results you can go more often, though 3 sessions a week is the maximum recommended. Check out 20 Seven Fitness Studios, http://www.20-seven.com/ now open at The View, Salmiya.

What is HIIT?

HIIT, or high-intensity interval training, is a training technique in which you give all-out, one hundred percent effort through quick, intense bursts of exercise, followed by short, sometimes active, recovery periods. This type of training gets and keeps your heart rate up and burns more fat in less time. A high-intensity workout increases the body’s need for oxygen during the effort and creates an oxygen shortage, causing your body to ask for more oxygen during recovery, this afterburn effect is referred to as Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption (EPOC) and is the reason why intense exercise will help burn more fat and calories than regular aerobic and steady-state workouts.

Not totally convinced? Here are a few other benefits from HIIT.

Increases your metabolism, combines high intensity with interval training results in EPOC, which speeds your metabolic rate and translates into a metabolism boost for up to 48 hours after a complete HIIT routine. Its quick and convenient, long gone are the days of not having enough time for exercise. HIIT workouts is can be done anywhere: at home, in a hotel room, in a park, at a gym, etc. And most are 30 minutes or less! Who can’t spare that? No equipment necessary, no dumbbells? No problem! HIIT workouts generally use only your body weight, since the focus is on getting your heart rate up and keeping it there.

Crossfit

CrossFit is a type of strength and conditioning workout that uses your own bodyweight for resistance in order to build power all over. Consistent with the benefits of high-intensity interval training, this means no standard cardio workouts and hours spent at the gym. CrossFit workouts might even be done entirely without any equipment or added weights, although some people will choose to use weights for certain movements.

According to the founders of CrossFit.com, several simple observations taken from top-performing athletes training over the past 30 years have formed the basic principles behind CrossFit workouts. Here are some of the key reasons CrossFit workouts were first introduced, and why they’ve been growing in popularity ever since:

Heavy lifters are able to apply more power to activities than endurance athletes. Powerlifters − those who attempt to lift maximum weights within three attempts − are especially strong.

Sprinters and people conditioned to do Burst Training are usually able to match the cardiovascular benefits and abilities of endurance athletes, but with less time spent training.

Endurance athletes and bodybuilders are usually very specialized in their sport — for example, being aerobically fit or very muscular — but can be lacking in versatility (like having allover strength, power or stamina).

Doing HIIT workouts and training at high intensities (meaning workouts that would be unsustainable for long periods of time) leads to numerous health benefits, including faster weight loss along with more fat-burning and muscle-building.

HIIT workouts can be done quickly (under an hour and sometimes much less) and don’t require someone to work out every single day to maintain strength.

CrossFit brings together knowledge from a diverse background of the world’s most physically fit people to form one full-body workout full of mind-body benefits. Specifically, CrossFit workouts cover “10 Fitness Domains” including: Cardiovascular and Respiratory, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance & accuracy.
