The Festive Winds are Blowing!

It’s the season and the festive winds are blowing over Kuwait. This year more than any other, most public places across the city seem to be embracing the occasion as a cultural celebration to bring a bit of festive cheer to our streets.

 

The shops have also stocked up, Marks and Spencers, Lulu’s and the Sultan Centre in particular are selling seasonal goods, such as Advent calendars, Christmas Cards and Brussel sprouts.

 

The festive season in Kuwait is embraced far and wide by the community in Kuwait. Many families who have studied in Europe and the US celebrate the tradition not as a religious date, but very much a children’s and family gathering where presents are sometimes exchanged and fun is certainly had. Meanwhile, the traditional midnight mass and Christmas services are being planned by the local churches. It is thought by few that celebrating Christmas is iilegal in Kuwait…on the contrary, it is written in the Kuwaiti Constitution:

Article 29: “All people are equal in human dignity, and in public rights and duties before the law, without distinction as to race, origin, language or religion.”

Article 35: “[The constitution] protects the freedom of practicing religion in accordance with established customs, provided that it does not conflict with public policy or morals.”

The Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony will take place the 2nd week in December at the Hilton Hotel Mangaf Resort and is by invitation only.

 

The Traditional Christmas Panto

Gingerbread House Making Competition

On the 6th December, enjoy the family-friendly activity scented with cinnamon and spice. Let the little ones express their creativity and decorate the gingerbread house. The activity will bring ultimate fun in a holiday spirit. The best and most creative house will be awarded. There have also been various sightings of Santa.  The bearded man in his red coat descended from the North Pole has been sighted around Kuwait, and we just know he’ll be putting in a few more appearances around K-Town….keep your eyes open! Please note, His last sighting has been reported in Khiran where he was seen chilling happily in a sunlounger on the beach ahead of his marathon round-the-world present giving. Reindeers feasted on fresh dates and pomegranates for which the season has just started. The red season is truly upon us, wherever you look!
